The film’s controversial coda – Spanish ships appearing on the shore as Jaguar Paw watches – has been read as either hopeful or tragic. And I am not afraid” – suggest a refusal to be broken by any empire, ancient or future. Gibson seems to argue that apocalypse is not an end but a recurrence.
