On October 12, 1972, a Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild FH-227D twin-engine turboprop aircraft carrying a team of rugby players and their friends and family members took off from Carrasco International Airport in Montevideo, Uruguay. The plane was headed to Santiago, Chile, but it never reached its destination. Due to severe icing conditions, the pilot became disoriented, and the plane crashed on a glacier in the Andes Mountains.
