The film is famous for its bleak "never-ending cycle." The twist is that the loop does not end on the ship. Jess escapes the ship, returns home, only to discover that her reality is also part of the cycle. She witnesses her abusive alternate self abusing her son, kills that version of herself, and leaves the bodies in the trunk of her car. As she drives away, she causes an accident—a triangle of birds falls, a truck hits her car—and she stands on the road, realizing she has returned to the beginning of the film (the harbor).
