According to tradition, this stotram was composed by , the King of Lanka and a great devotee of Shiva. Legend has it that Ravana had attempted to lift Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva, to take it to Lanka. When he failed and was crushed under the mountain's weight, he plucked his own veins to make a musical instrument (the Rudra Veena) and sang this intense stotram to appease the Lord.
