This paper traces the genre’s evolution from its folkloric origins through its formal establishment by Rabindranath Tagore, its radical democratization by Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay and Manik Bandyopadhyay, to its postmodern experiments. It argues that the Bengali short story’s unique contribution lies in its ability to oscillate between lyrical romanticism and stark, realist depictions of famine, partition, and urban alienation.
